The statue houses over 125,000 smaller Buddha images and offers panoramic views of the city. Motithang Takin Preserve – A unique wildlife reserve home to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin. Originally a small zoo, it was later converted into a preserve to allow animals to roam freely in their natural habitat. It’s a popular spot for evening strolls and local gatherings. Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) – A majestic fortress-monastery located on the banks of the Wang Chhu River, serving as the seat of the Bhutanese government and the residence of the Chief Abbot. En route, visit the following attractions: Punakha Dzong – One of Bhutan’s most stunning and historically significant fortresses, located at the confluence of the Pho Chu (male) and Mo Chu (female) rivers. Built in the 17th century, this Dzong is an architectural masterpiece and also hosts the vibrant Punakha Tshechu Festival each year. Visitors can explore its sacred halls, ancient murals, and grand courtyards that reflect Bhutan’s spiritual legacy. Punakha Suspension Bridge – Among the oldest suspension bridges in Bhutan, believed to have been built by the great Buddhist monk Thangtong Gyalpo. Located around 10 km north of Paro town at an altitude of 3,120 meters, Taktsang Lhakhang can be reached by a 2–3 hour trek through serene pine forests adorned with fluttering prayer flags. The trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
